FAZLI MAXIMISES BIKE AERODYNAMICS TO TAKE PROVISIONAL POLE

There’s a special term in Underbone racing known as ‘the tuck’. Essentially, the term refers to an Underbone rider’s ability to literally ‘tuck’ himself into the frame of the bike and maximizing the natural aerodynamics of the machine. In Malaysia, seasoned campaigner Ahmad Fazli Sham is the undisputed king of ‘the tuck’. Fifth after the first two free practice sessions, Fazli Sham slipstreamed his way to the top of the timesheets during the qualifying practice with 2’32.984s. The ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team rider was the only Underbone rider to lap within 2’32 in the qualifying practice. Yamaha Racing Indonesia’s Aldi Satya Mahendra, a rookie entry in the 2019 season, continued to gain fans with his consistent performance. Aldi clocked in with 2’33.213s behind Fazli Sham. Indonesian Underbone specialist and now Ahmad Fazli Sham’s ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team team mate, Wahyu Aji Trilaksana posted the third fastest time of the day with 2’33.364s. The 30-minute Underbone qualifier also brought out the best from Fernando Masato of the Philippines. The UMA Racing Yamaha Philippine Team rider stopped the clock at 2’33.629s. Meanwhile, Mohd Akid Aziz who had been fastest in the morning practice, dropped to fifth with 2’33.846s.

PARKES SETTLES IN

Australian Broc Parkes seems to be settling in and getting comfortable in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship environment. The 38-year-old from the Hunter Region in New South Wales Australia, is doing double-duty this year, racing in both the EWC with YART and the Asia Road Racing Championship with Yamaha Racing Team Asean. We stole five minutes of his time for a quick update: New Circuits to Conquer “Aside from Suzuka and Sepang, the rest of the circuits are unfamiliar to me. This will be a brand new challenge.” The Bike and Preprations for Round 1 “I’m happy with the preparations so far. The team had had the opportunity to do some private testing at Sepang a few weeks ago. During the 2-day pre-season test, we were able to lay a good foundation for the first round.” “The spec of the bike is stock while I’m more used to bikes with more race specs. In a way, it feels closer to riding a 600cc (as opposed to a fully kitted out Superbike) Dunlop Tyres “I have not raced on Dunlop tyres for many years. But I have been able to understand the tyres very quickly. I find it to be very consistent.” First Full Asian Season “I have had spot entries in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in the past. I joined the series for the Qatar round in 2013 where I finished 4th in Race 1 and 2ndin Race 2. I repeated the stint in 2015 but unfortunately, was unable to start the race due to engine troubles.

DUNLOP: ASB1000 CUSTOM SLICKS

A year’s worth of intense research and development has gone into Dunlop’s final custom slicks for the new ASB1000 class, resulting in a new model of slick tyres available to the market. The pertinent details of the tyres are as follows: Model Number  Compound FRONT  120/70R17 KR149 Soft Medium Hard REAR  250/60R17 KR133 Soft Hard According to Mr. Kentaro Kobayashi, Management and Service Engineer of Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd (Dunlop), the results from the pre-season test of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship had exceeded expectations. “The pre-test was really important for the developers of the tyre. It had been five years since the Asian series raced at Sepang and the lack of data as well as the known abrasion of the circuit was a concern.” “However, we were pleased to have the tyres working well in all weather conditions from 30 degrees Celsius in the morning to more than 62 degrees Celsius in the afternoon.” “While developing the product, we wanted to create an easy-to-use slick tyre that is comfortable. We tried to develop a super wide range for the big changes of track temperature as can be seen at the Sepang Circuit. Looking at the results from the pre-season test, I believe we have achieved that,” said Mr. Kobayashi. The KR149 and KR133 are marked with the ASB1000 logo and available for purchase in the market. For more information, interested parties are advised to contact their local Dunlop distributors.

SHAHROL SYAZRAS SHAHROL YUZY: IN HIS FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS

A love for speed seems to be hereditary. Rider’s sons aspiring to become successful riders like famous fathers are nothing new in the motorsports industry. Therefore, it came as no surprise to former Malaysian GP rider Shahrol Yuzy Ahmad Zaini when young Shahrol Syazras Shahrol Yuzy decided to put on his racing boots to follow in the footsteps of his father. “When I was a kid, I would say I was rather indifferent to the sport. I knew what my father did for a living, but motorsports was something that was just there,” said 17-year-old Syazras. “It wasn’t until I started following my father to the PETRONAS Malaysian Cub Prix Championship races that I became intrigued. That was when I started pestering him for a bike of my own.” Lucky enough to have a father who runs his own national and Asian team, Syazras is racing in the Asia Production 250cc class of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. “I did nothing to encourage my son to race. He was just exposed to the racing environment. His interest in the sport developed naturally from there,” said Yuzy. During the pre-season test ahead of Round 1, Syazras was 18th fastest out of 26 bikes. His best time, 2’34.918s, was 9.184 seconds behind provisional class leader Andy Muhammad Fadly. However, the daunting prospect of starting the race from the lower end of the grid has not dampened Syazras’s enthusiasm. “My father is always telling me that I must improve on my rolling speed and to be more aggressive at the corners. We have not set any targets for 2019. This year’s objective is to learn.” Indeed, under his father’s tutelage, Syazras is on an accelerated learning curve. “The Asia Production 250 class is just as competitive as the Underbone 150. At 17, Syazras fits better into the age-median in the 250 class as opposed to the Underbone category. My one regret is that I did not allow him to start racing sooner. That was the reason we decided on the 250 category, to enable him to catch up despite a relatively late start into the sport.”

NEW LOOK SUPERSPORTS 600

The revamped SuperSports 600cc has a new look this season. Many of the big names who had crowded the podium in previous years have left for the new ASB1000 class. With the age-cap in place, the 2019 SuperSports 600cc class will pit the skills of young and upcoming Asean riders against each other.   At the time of writing, 13 riders are confirmed for Round 1. This group can be roughly divided into half – one group having had some experience in the Asian SuperSports 600cc class, while the second half are riders who are new to the SS600.   EXPERIENCED IN SS600 NEW TO SS600 ·       Azroy Hakeem Anuar ·       Mohd Ramdan Rosli ·       Andi Farid Izdihar ·       Krichaporn Kaewsonthi ·       Ahmad Afif Amran ·       Passawit Thitivararak ·       Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin ·       Rheza Danica Ahrens ·       Peerapong Boonlert ·       Mohd Helmi Azman ·       Liam MacDonald ·       Adam Norrodin ·       Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam   The first group have had some experience racing in the SuperSports 600cc when it was the premiere class of the Asian series. Having raced against the likes of Anthony West, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, Zaqhwan Zaidi, Decha Kraisart, Ratthapong Wilairot and Ahmad Yudhistira, these riders are now the new seniors in the 600cc class.   Of the seven, Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin probably has the most experience in the category. Ahmad Afif Amran returns to the 600cc after spending a few seasons racing in the Asia Production 250cc.   However, the six riders in the second group may be new to the ARRC, but they are no means inexperienced astride a 600cc machine.   2018 Asia Production champion Rheza Danica Ahrens has had some experience in the Suzuka 4 Hours. Similarly, Peerapong Boonlert is a 2-times Suzuka 4 Hours champion.   2018 Underbone 150cc champion Mohd Helmi Azman may seem to have made a huge Underbone to SuperSports leap, but the young Honda rider was second overall in the 2018 MSBK SuperSports Open class.   Liam MacDonald put in a few races in the 600cc class last year, and he was also the 2018 MSBK SuperSport Open winner. Fakhrusy Syakirin Rostam was also among the top MSBK riders last year.   Finally, Adam Norrodin may be a newcomer to the ARRC, but he has spent the last three years in the Moto3 class of the MotoGP.
