LIGHTS TO FLAG WIN FOR MARKUS REITERBERGER IN ASB1000 RACE 2

The expected thunderstorm forecasted in the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship season opener at the Sepang International Circuit held off long enough for the ASB1000 Race 2 to get underway. The dry conditions were much more to Markus Reiterberger’s liking. The German rider, back in his element, made short work of the ASB1000 Race 2 when he scored a lights-to-flag victory in a time of 25’29.725s. The drama in the ASB1000 class was served up in the battle for P2 and P3 played out between Apiwat Wongthananon, Broc Parkes, Anupab Sarmoon, Lorenzo Zanetti, Thitipong Warokorn, Yuki Ito, and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman. Apiwat was consistently strong throughout the 12-lap race. The YAMAHA Thailand Racing Team rider kept his cool even while under attack from Lorenzo Zanetti and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman. Access Plus Racing-Okada-Team’s Lorenzo Zanetti showed his mettle when he charged past Apiwat at the last corner of Lap 4. Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman then stole the limelight from the Ducati test rider when he came storming up from eighth on Lap 1 to second on Lap 6. Azlan stayed in second from Lap 7 to Lap 11 when the Malaysian rider overcooked the south end of the track and crashed out from P2. One lap remaining, with Azlan out of the race, Apiwat was back in P2. The Thai rider held on to the position and claimed a double podium from the Sepang weekend with 25’37.139s. Lorenzo Zanetti hunkered down in P3, and would have staked out a first podium finish for Ducati in the ASB1000 class when he ran out of fuel in the final sprint from Turn 15 to the finish line. Broc Parkes neatly avoided a collision with the slowing Ducati, and scrambled across the finish line in third with 25’39.078s. Apiwat Wongthananon has come up tops from the season opening weekend. With two podiums under his belt, the Thai rider leads the ASB1000 class with 40 points. Markus Reiterberger trails in second with 38 points. Yuki Ito finished sixth in Race 2, and is now third in the title chase with 35 points. ADAM IMPERIOUS IN RACE 2

The start of the SS600 Race 2 was red flagged following multiple crashes in the opening lap. Soichiro Minamimoto, Ahmad Afif Amran, Rei Toshima, and Ratthapong Wilairot were caught out in separate incidences by a few oil spill left on the track following the AP250 race earlier. Thankfully, the riders walked away from the crashes without serious injuries. The Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing Team did a phenomenal job turning Minamimoto’s bike around in time for him to rejoin the grid 15 minutes later. Race 2 was re-started with the original 10 laps cut down eight. Straight off the bat, the Malaysian riders’ expertise at the 5.5km Sepang International Circuit was hard to beat. 2018 SuperSports 600cc champion Ratthapong Wilairot gained the early lead on Lap 1 but dropped down to P5 within the space of a lap when Azroy Hakeem came charging to the front with Adam Norrodin, Ibrahim Norrodin and Helmi Azman in tow. The remainder of the SS600 Race 2 turned into an all-Malaysian affair at the front, pitting the Yamahas of the PACHI ZK Racing against the Hondas of the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team. Adam Norrodin led from Lap 5 to the last corner, indifferent to the pressure piled on him by the chasing trio. Adam barely missed a step even as Ibrahim tried to pull off an ambitious last lap-last corner overtaking move on him. Unfazed, Adam raced to the finish line to claim his first win of the season with 17’36.715s. Ibrahim, in contrast, fell victim to his own reckless move. The younger Norrodin sibling low-sided out of the race within meters of the finish line. Instead of a ZK Racing 1-2, the incident handed the final two podium positions to Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Helmi Azman. Ratthapong Wilairot improved on his finishing position in Race 2. The Thai Yamaha rider closed his weekend in fifth. Ramdan Rosli crossed the finish line in sixth followed by Soichiro Minamimoto, McKinley Kyle Paz, Sota Furuyama, Ahmad Yudhistira and Troy Alberto. FADLY-AIKI 1-2 IN AP250 RACE 2

Andy Muhammad Fadly made up for a disappointing Race 1 when he triumphed over a battle of wills against his own Motul Manual Tech Racing Team team mate, Aiki Iyoshi in the Asia Production 250cc Race 2.   The AP250 defending champion had a lot of ground to make up for when a failed gear lever at the final lap of Race 1 left him 13th in the race. The 8-lap race flagged off with Fadly again on pole, but the holeshot at Turn 1 was snatched away by Aiki. The two Kawasakis led the first lap with the Hondas of Race 1 winner Idlan Haqimi Raduan and Izam Ikmal in hot pursuit.   Race 2 did not pan out well for the IDEMITSU Boon Siew Honda Racing Team duo when Idlan Haqimi crashed out of Lap 2 at Turn 1. Idlan’s retirement left Izam Ikmal alone and out-numbered by the two Kawasaki team mates who also had the advantage of experience and exposure in AP250 racing tactics.   The leading trio pulled away by a hefty 20 seconds in front of the second group where Wahyu Nugroho, Vorapong Malahuan, Anggi Setiawan and Mohd Muzakkir Mohamed were scrabbling to finish within the top five.   Team orders were obviously not in play within the Motul Manual Tech Racing Team. There were no quarters given between Fadly and Aiki as they swapped leads right up to the final corner. Aiki tried a final move at Turn 15 but failed to dislodge Fadly from his course.   The Indonesian rider sprinted to the finish line to take the win ahead of his team mate with 19’39.574s. Aiki Iyoshi, however, will leave the Sepang International Circuit as the early leader in the AP250 class. The Japanese rider picked up his second P2 finish with 19’39.694s. Izam Ikmal scored at least another podium for debutant IDEMITSU Boon Siew Honda Racing Team in third with 19’39.983s.   Wahyu Nugroho won the battle of the second group in fourth place while Vorapong Malahuan delivered a solid fifth place finish for TVS Racing.       AP250: Top 5 Race 2 Results   Andy Fadly (INA) (Kawasaki)                 2’26.647s Izam Ikmal (MAS) (Honda)                    2’27.546s Aiki Iyoshi (JPN) (Kawasaki)                  2’28.249s Shahrol Syazras Yuzy (MAS) (Honda)   2’29.230s Anggi Setiawan (INA) (Yamaha)            2’29.328s     AP250: Top 5 Standings After Round 1   Aiki Iyoshi (JPN) (Kawasaki)                  40 pts Izam Ikmal (MAS) (Honda)                    32 pts Andy Fadly (INA) (Kawasaki)                 28 pts Wahyu Nugroho (INA) (Yamaha)          26 pts Idlan Haqimi Raduan (MAS) (Honda)   25 pts   AP250: Top 5 Team Standings After Round 1   Motul Manual Tech Racing Team                       68 pts IDEMITSU Boon Siew Honda Racing Team      57 pts YAMAHA Racing Indonesia                                41 pts ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team                    31 pts TVS Racing                                                           30 pts

FAZLI NETS DOUBLE UB150 WIN FOR ONEXOX TKKR SAG TEAM

Ahmad Fazli Sham netted a second UB150 victory for the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team when he dominated Race 2 in the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship season opener at the Sepang International Circuit. With this win, Fazli erased the bad memories from 2019 when he finished out of the points in both the Sepang rounds. Race 2 got off, again with Fazli’s younger brother Ahmad Fazrul Sham on pole. The Cardinals Racing Team rider lost the holeshot to Akid Aziz, but made up for lost ground when he led his team mate Iqbal Abdul Malek in 1-2 formation across the finish line by the end of Lap 1. Fazli got into the lead as Lap 2 commenced. The seasoned UB150 campaigner kept his position even as a big crash between Wahyu Aji Trilaksana, Iqbal Abdul Malek and Fernando Masato shook things up at the front. As the 20-rider group swarmed into the final lap, poleman Fazrul tried to peel away but lost his advantage in the long backstraight before heading to the last corner. A neat move by Fazli saw him ducking into the inside line and raced ahead of Fazrul to pick up his sixth career Sepang win with 15’34.448s. RCB YAMAHA YY Pang’s Mohd Izzat Zaidi served up a surprise when he finished the race in second place with 15’34.549s. The outcome from Race 2 represented a big comeback for Izzat who sat out of Race 1 on Saturday due to mechanical errors. Race 2 reunited the two brothers on the podium as Cardinals Racing Team’s Ahmad Fazrul Sham crossed the line in third. The Sham siblings are now leading the UB150 title chase. Fazrul’s double Sepang podiums placed him at the top of the ladder with 36 points. Fazli ranked second with 34 points. Wahyu Aji Trilaksana, winner of Race 1, was one of the riders who crashed out on Lap 3. The Indonesian dropped to third overall with 25 points. The UB150 Race 2 also brought some sterling performances from the newcomers to the Asian series. SND Factory Racing Rapido’s Muhammad Hildan Kusuma finished a creditable fourth while 4S1M YAMAHA Racing Team’s John Emerson Inguito gave Filipino fans something to cheer for when he crossed the finish line in fifth. ITO WINS THE DAY IN ASB1000 RACE 1

Markus Reiterberger may have been on a record breaking streak throughout the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship season opening weekend, but it was Yuki Ito who emerged triumphant as torrential rain swept through the Sepang International Circuit.   ONEXOX BMW TKKR SAG Team’s Markus Reiterberger continued on his record-breaking charge when he set another lap record, 2’04.762s in the ASB1000 qualifier. More than a second quicker than the rest of the field, Markus confirmed himself for pole in both Race 1 and Race 2.   However, the German rider’s race strategy was disrupted at the last minute when a torrential downpour broke over the Sepang International Circuit, just as the ASB1000 Race 1 was scheduled to start. The thunderstorm caused a delay of almost 45 minutes, but stopped long enough for the full race to take place.   Markus peeled off from pole position but soon lost the lead to Yuki Ito from YAMAHA Racing Team ASEAN. Supremely confident and silky smooth in the wet, Yuki carved up a 3 second lead within the span of a single lap.   Behind the Japanese rider, Markus lost P2 to Broc Parkes and then ran wide on Lap 3, dropping down to P5 as Apiwat Wongthananon and Anupab Sarmoon went racing past.   By the midpoint of the race, Ito was absolutely in his element, lapping almost a second quicker than the rest of the grid. As the chequered flag came down on Lap 12, Ito clinched the first ASB1000 win of his career with 28’16.971s.   The YAMAHA Racing Team ASEAN was on course for a 1-2 finish until Lap 11 when Broc Parkes high sided at Turn 12. The crash caused significant damage to the Australian rider’s handlebars and prevented him from returning to the track.   Broc’s crash left the field wide open for Apiwat Wongthananon and comeback kid Anupab Sarmoon to deliver two podium spots to the YAMAHA Thailand Racing Team. Apiwat Wongthananon finished second with 28’24.580s, 7.6 seconds behind marquee-mate Ito. Anupab enjoyed a successful ARRC comeback in third with 28’39.751s.   Markus Reiterberger missed out on the podium in fourth place (28’44.981s). With much of the team’s set up done in the dry, the BMW rider faced problems with his rear grip in the wet.  Lorenzo Zanetti took Access Plus Racing-Okada-Team’s Ducati to fifth with 28’49.555s.   Further down the field, Kawasaki’s Thitipong Warokorn would be glad to see the day come to an end. Thitipong crashed out during the qualifying session, caught off-guard by underground water seeping onto the tarmac at Turn 4. The KAWASAKI Thailand Racing Team raced the clock to get his bike back in race-shape but the rain brought more challenges. Thitipong finished in ninth ahead of his team mate Ryosuke Iwato.   ASB1000: Top 5 Qualifying Results   Markus Reiterberger (GER) (BMW)                   2’04.762s Broc Parkes (AUS) (Yamaha)                               2’06.050s Apiwat Wongthananon (THA) (Yamaha)              2’06.075s Yuki Ito (JPN) (Yamaha)                                     2’06.254s Lorenzo Zanetti (ITA) (Ducati)                            2’06.292s     ASB1000: Top 5 Race 1 Results   Yuki Ito (JPN) (Yamaha)                                     28’16.971s Apiwat Wongthananon (THA) (Yamaha)              28’24.580s Anupab Sarmoon (THA) (Yamaha)                     28’39.751s Markus Reiterberger (GER) (BMW)                   28’44.981s Lorenzo Zanetti (ITA) (Ducati)                            28’49.555s

AZROY PUTS BOON SIEW HONDA BACK IN WINNING FORM

Honda rider Azroy Hakeem Anuar has succeeded in putting the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team back in winning form in the SuperSports 600cc category.   Earlier in the day, the Norrodin brothers continued to dominate the proceedings in the SS600 qualifier despite stiff resistance from 2018 SuperSports 600cc champion, Ratthapong Wilairot. As expected, the closing minutes of the qualifying saw frantic changes at the top of the leaderboard with this season’s front runners vying for the coveted front row with the aid of the rear soft compound tyre.   Adam Norrodin sealed the pole position with a fastest lap of 2’09.402s. After a slow start in free practice, Ratthapong Wilairot popped up to claim P2 with 2’09.499s and relegated Ibrahim Norrodin’s best qualifying time of 2’09.706s, to P3.   After a strong showing in the first day of practice, the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team looked have hit a snag when both Helmi Azman and Azroy Hakeem Anuar qualified sixth and seventh respectively.   However, the second row start was no deterrent for the two determined Honda riders who only needed a single lap to wade into the front group.   Adam Norrodin had the first half of the race firmly under control but crashed out from the lead on Lap 6.   Helmi Azman took full advantage of Adam’s crash to charge into the lead, with Azroy and Ahmad Afif Amran in tow. While the three were engrossed in their tussle for the lead, Ibrahim Norrodin caught up and turned the final lap into a four-way fight.   But there was no going past Azroy Hakeem Anuar who put up a commanding performance at the front to pick up his first SuperSports 600cc win with 21’53.229s. It would also be the first win for the Boon Siew Honda camp since Zaqhwan’s last victory in 2017.   Behind Azroy, Ahmad Afif Amran showed remarkable improvement when he clinched his first SS600 podium in second place with 21’53.288s. Ibrahim Norrodin pipped Helmi Azman to the last spot on the podium with 21’53.532s.   Helmi Azman and Soichiro Minamimoto rounded up the top five followed by Yusuke Nakamura in sixth. Adam Norrodin recovered from his crash and was seventh across the line in Race 1.   SuperSports 600cc debutants McKinley Kyle Paz and Troy Alberto put in creditable performances in their maiden race with both finishing within the top-10.     SS600: Top 5 Qualifying Results   Adam Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                        2’09.402s Ratthapong Wilairot (THA) (Yamaha)                2’09.499s Ibrahim Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                    2’09.706s Ahmad Afif Amran (MAS) (Yamaha)                   2’09.713s Soichiro Minamimoto (JPN) (Yamaha)               2’09.975s     SS600: Top 5 Race 1 Results   Azroy Hakeem Anuar (MAS) (Honda)                 21’53.229s Ahmad Afif Amran (MAS) (Yamaha)                   21’53.288s Ibrahim Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                    21’53.532s Helmi Azman (MAS) (Honda)                              21’53.608s Soichiro Minamimoto (JPN) (Yamaha)               22’05.142s
