2018 Round2

LUCKY ITO TAKES FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Tensions ran high as the premiere class riders lined up on the grid for Race 2 of the SuperSports 600cc class. Following the cancellation of Race 1, everyone had been determined to finish the race in grand fashion at the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship’s Australian debut at The Bend Motorsport Park.   The 600cc grid was cut down further when Decha Kraisart and Broc Pearson had to pull out due to injuries sustained earlier in the weekend.   Ito, who was one of the riders who had crashed out in Race 1, was lucky to have been able to get back onto the grid for Race 2. As the race was flagged off, the Yamaha Racing Team Asean poleman jumped into the lead ahead of Ratthapong Wilairot and Taiga Hada. The Japanese ace was racing well until a crash by Irfan Ardiansyah brought out the red flag on Lap 4.   The SuperSports 600cc race was re-started and reduced to 8 laps. At the re-start, Malaysian rookie Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin took the early lead, again with Ratthapong and Yuki Ito in tow. Kasma ran wide on Lap 3, creating an opening for Ito to ride into the lead.   The Yamaha Racing Team Asean rider proceeded to control the race pace from the front of the group and ended the race in first with 15’42.605s. This would be Ito’s first win since Round 5 in India, in 2017.   Ratthapong Wilairot also reveled in his first SuperSports 600cc podium when he finished second with 15’44.207s. Malaysian rookie Mohd Ramdan Mohd Rosli created quite a stir when he came home in third place, clocking 15’49.587s.   Keisuke Kurihara and Keminth Kubo placed fourth and fifth respectively followed by Andi Farid Izdihar in fifth, Azroy Hakeem Anuar, Kasma Daniel, Joe Francis and defending champion Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman.   The shakeup from Race 1 has had a huge impact on the title chase. With points awarded only for Race 2, Ito was unable to take the lead from the absent Anthony West. West is still at the top of the ladder with 45 points. Ito is now ranked second with 42 points. Azlan Shah has dropped to third overall with 38 points.

CLEAN SWEEP BY ASTRA HONDA RACING TEAM

The Astra Honda Racing Team had plenty to cheer about when Rheza Danica Ahrens, Mario Suryo Aji and Awhin Sanjaya made a clean sweep of the podium in the Asia Production 250cc Race 2.   It was a remarkable achievement especially considering both Mario and Awhin were pushed out of the leading group at the Lap 1/Turn1 bottleneck. Poleman Rheza was the only one to escape the melee as he blazed into the holeshot and made a clean getaway at the front. With a clean piece of track in front of him, Rheza was able to put in several good laps that saw him extend his lead to 6.2 seconds by Lap 3.   Mario and Awhin worked their way steadily up the grid. By Lap 4, Mario had arrived in the second pack and was engaging Rafid Topan Sucipto and Andy Muhammad Fadly for P2.  On Lap 5, Awhin joined into the fray, causing more disarray in the fight for the remaining two spots on the podium.   The biggest surprise was sprung by Muklada Sarapuech who popped onto the radar in P2 at the start of the eighth lap. However, a race incident involving Anggi Setiawan brought out the red flag and Race 2 was subsequently declared as complete.   Final race positions were taken from Lap 7 which automatically awarded 1-2-3 to Rheza, Mario and Awhin.   Rheza took his first AP250 double with a time of 15’01.965s. Mario claimed his third second-placed finish with 15’05.125s while Awhin grabbed his first podium of the season with 15’10.375s.   Anupab Sarmoon and Andy Muhammad Fadly rounded up the top five, followed by Anggi Setiawan, Muklada Sarapuech, Ahmad Afif Amran, Rafid Topan Sucipto and Peerapong Boonlert in the top 10.   Rheza secures his championship lead with 73 points. After Round 2, Mario is now ranked second with 66 points. Yamaha Thailand Racing Team’s Anupab Sarmoon is now third with 62 points.

UMA RACING FULL HOUSE

Uma Racing Yamaha Maju Motor Asia Team celebrated a full house when Mohd Haziq Mohd Fairues, wildcard Mckinley Kyle Paz, and defending champion Mohd Akid Aziz made a clean sweep of the Underbone 150cc Race 2 podium.   The 7-lap race at The Bend Motorsport Park got off with poleman Mohd Helmi Azman pulling off into the lead. Riding on his slipstream, was Mohd Haziq Mohd Fairues. The two riders from separate teams worked together in the early stages of the race to pull ahead from the chasing pack.   By Lap 3, both Aiman and Haziq had created a 4-second gap ahead of the rest. More drama on Lap 4 as Wahyu Aji Trilaksana clipped Akid’s rear tyre. Akid survived the encounter, but Wahyu crashed out.   On Lap 5, Helmi’s bike sputtered to a stop. This left Haziq alone at the sharp end of the group where he went on to win the Underbone 150cc Race 2 with 16’07.730s.   6.255 seconds behind Haziq, Mckinley and Akid were also working in tandem to hold off their Indonesian rivals Syahrul Amin and Gupita Kresna Wardhana. The team mates completed the full house when they finished second and third respectively with 16’13.985s and 16’20.328s.   Race 1 winner, Mohd Izzat Zaidi from team RCB Yamaha YY Pang Racing picked up 9 points from Race 2 when he crossed the finish line in seventh. Izzat retains control of the Underbone title chase with 67 points. Helmi Azman’s DNF in Race 2 had cost him dearly. He drops to second overall with 56 points. Mohd Affendi Rosli ranked third overall after finishing sixth in Race 2.

SUPERSPORTS 600cc RACE 1 DEEMED CANCELLED

The SuperSports 600cc Race 1 at The Bend Motorsport Park, Round 2 of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship, has been deemed cancelled after two separate incidents brought out the red flags twice in the duration of the race.   The original 15-lap race was first red flagged on Lap 3 when race leader Yuki Ito highsided. Ito, fortunately, walked away uninjured by the crash. The 600cc grid re-convened for a shortened 9-lap race but was again interrupted when championship leader Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman took a tumble at the same corner on Lap 3.   Under ARRC regulations, Race 1 is deemed cancelled and no championship points will be awarded.

ALL-INDONESIAN PODIUM IN THE 250cc CLASS

The Indonesian riders in the Asia Production 250cc class enjoyed tremendous success on their first outing at The Bend Motorsport Park, host to Round 2 of the 2018 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Rheza Danica Ahrens and Mario Suryo Aji from the Astra Honda Racing Team, along with Andy Muhammad Fadly from the Kawasaki camp, ended the day triumphant with a clean sweep of the Race 1 podium.   Poleman Rheza Danica Ahrens fell under pressure from the start of the race, particularly from Mario Suryo Aji. In the absence of team orders, the two team mates swapped leads for the bulk of the 9-lap race. The blistering pace set by the two lead riders pushed them ahead of the chasing pack. As the chequered flag came down, Rheza slipstreamed past Mario at the last minute to secure his first win of the season with 19’18.357s. A mere .079s behind, Mario stormed home for his third P2 position of the season with 19’18.436s.   Astra Honda Racing Team’s third rider, Awhin Sanjaya who started the race third on the grid, lost touch with his team mates and found himself in the thick of the battle for P3 against Andy Muhammad Fadly and Anupab Sarmoon. Under intense heat for the last spot on the podium, Awhin overcooked the last corner and crashed out of the race, denying the Astra Honda Racing Team the coveted 1-2-3 finish that they had been working towards.   A much improved Andy Muhammad Fadly took full advantage of Awhin’s crash to bring his Kawasaki home in third place with 19’18.357s.   Championship leader Anupab Sarmoon and compatriot Muklada Sarapuech ended the race in P4 and P5 respectively.   Other riders in the top 10 included Kritchaporn Kaewsonthi, Anggi Setiawan, Rafid Topan Sucipto, M. Faerozi and Ahmad Afif Amran.

IZZAT BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH HIS WINNING WAYS

RCB Yamaha YY Pang’s Mohd Izzat Zaidi proved that his season opening win in Thailand a month ago was no fluke with another winning performance at The Bend Motorsport Park in Round 2 of the 2018 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship.   The Malaysian rider who started the race from second on the grid, ran a smart race tucked in deep within the leading pack. While Mohd Helmi Azman, Wahyu Aji Trilaksana and McKinley Kyle Paz took turns leading the group across the start/finish line, Izzat played a 6-lap waiting game before coming out of the shadows in the last lap.   As the Underbone 150cc riders entered three-abreast into the final corner, Izzat successfully broke out of the slipstream to take his second win of the season with 16’23.831s. Championship leader Mohd Helmi Azman from the SCK Rapido Hi Rev Honda Racing Team stayed in touch with the title chase by coming home in second place, 16’23.947s. Indonesian rider Wahyu Aji Trilaksana picked up his first podium of the season in third place, 16’23.968s.   With this win, Izzat has taken over the championship lead from Helmi Azman. The Yamaha rider leads with 58 points. Helmi dropped to second overall with 56 points. As strategies and plans are being laid down for Race 2 on Sunday, Wahyu will need to overcome a 20-point deficit from third on the ladder.

ITO IN CHARGE

Yuki Ito and the Yamaha Racing Team Asean has succeeded in their efforts to unlock the true potential of the 2017 Yamaha R6. Ito has been a strong contender throughout the SuperSports 600cc free practice sessions at Round 2 of the ARRC at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia. He further sealed his dominance when he took his Yamaha to pole position with a fast lap of 1’56.591s.   In the absence of podium regulars Anthony West and Zaqhwan Zaidi, defending champion Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman saw Round 2 as an opportunity to bend the title chase in his favour. Instead, the Malaysian rider has been facing problems with his Kawasaki and uncharacteristically, qualified only P11 in the Australian round.   West’s super-sub, BSB rider Joseph Francis, proved to be the right choice for team Webike Ikazuchi Racing. The British rider qualified second on the grid with 1’56.690s. Idemitsu Honda Racing  India by T.Pro Ten10’s Taiga Hada slipped into the last position on the front grid. Hada clocked third fastest with 1’56.710s.   Rookie Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin served up the biggest surprise in the SuperSports 600cc qualifying. After a creditable full-season debut in Thailand, Kasma netted a blazing 1’56.736s to qualify for P4. The young Malaysian rider will lead the second row ahead of seasoned campaigners Tomoyoshi Koyama and Decha Kraisart on P5 and P6 respectively.   Ratthapong Wilairot, Irfan Ardiansyah, Ahmad Yudhistira, and Mohd Ramdan Rosli rounded up the top 10.

FRONT ROW LOCKDOWN BY AHRT TRIO

Astra Honda Racing Team trio, Rheza Danica Ahrens, Mario Suryo Aji, and Awhin Sanjaya has got the Asia Production 250cc front row locked down tight as Round 2 of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship got down to the business end of its race weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia.   Rheza, who had been consistently among the top runners during the free practice session, confirmed his right to park on pole position with a fast 2’08.039s. Rheza’s rookie team mate, young Mario Suryo Aji, was able to match Rheza pace-for-pace with 2’08.561s. Awhin got onto the front row during the  closing minutes of the qualifying session. Thanks to a little bit of a tow from Mario, Awhin shaved more than a second off his personal best time to secure P3 with 2’08.773s.   Apart from Rheza, Mario and Awhin, the rest of the Indonesians on the field had also taken well to the 4.9km Bend Motorsport Park. Rafid Topan Sucipto will lead the second row with the fourth fastest time on the grid, 2’09.004s. Anupab Sarmoon is one of three Thai riders in the top-10, qualifying P5 with 2’09.004s. Anupab will start the race sandwiched between Rafid Topan and M. Faerozi who will start the race from P6 with 2’09.086s.   Andy Muhammad Fadly and Anggi Setiawan qualified within the top 10 – P7 with 2’09.166s and P8 with 2’09.482s respectively. Muklada Sarapuech’s qualifying strategy unraveled when her bike malfunctioned in the last few minutes of the qualifier. ITO FLIES HIGH

Tyre abrasion was the primary concern among the SuperSports 600cc riders as the first day of free practices concluded for Round 2 at The Bend Motorsport Park. The new track asphalt had proven to be particularly unforgiving.   Nevertheless, competition is still fierce across the grid with a determined Yuki Ito leading the way. The Yamaha Racing Team Asean rider posted 1’57.332s at the top of the timesheets. Also lapping within the same second, are Yamaha Thailand Racing Team duo Decha Kraisart and Keminth Kubo with 1’57.552s and 1’57.964s respectively.   Wildcard Broc Pearson could be a potential podium threat. The Australian rider who is very familiar with the level of competition in the Asia Road Racing Championship, pulled off the fourth fastest time, 1’58.034s. Tomoyoshi Koyama from team MUSASHi Boon Siew Honda logged fifth fastest with 1’58.288s.   The lack of team data at the new circuit is becoming quickly apparent. The first day of practice had brought mixed results among the top 10. Astra Honda Racing Team’s Irfan Ardiansyah was sixth fastest with 1’58.338s. Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki Racing’s Ahmad Yudhistira posted seventh while his defending champion team mate, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, clocked a conservative tenth fastest with 1’58.641s.   Malaysian rookie Azroy Hakeem Anuar also produced creditable results, eighth fastest with 1’58.561s. Wildcard Tom Toparis was ninth fastest after the first day of practice.
