MAKE-OR-BREAK ROUND FOR ZAQHWAN IN SEPANG

The penultimate leg of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship will be a crucial round for Malaysian rider Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi. Trailing Broc Parkes by 35 points, Zaqhwan will need strong results from his home round to keep his ASB1000 title hopes alive. In terms of performance, the Honda Asia Dream Racing with SHOWA rider had been able to match his Australian rival’s pace in almost every round. Both riders had consistently finished within the top-five in the previous 10 races. An attack by the mechanical gremlins in the season opener set Zaqhwan’s campaign off on the back foot. He’s been fighting to make up for lost points since. “I’m feeling extremely confident going back to Sepang for the penultimate round. Our team engineers have made a lot of progress with our machine’s performance since that first race. Coupled with our constant training at the All Japan, I am optimistic that I will be able to convert homeground advantage into podium finishes,” said Zaqhwan who had scored two wins in the 2019 season so far. As long as Zaqhwan picks up 40 points from Sepang, the race to become the first Asian ASB1000 champion cannot end in Sepang. However, if Broc bags the maximum 50 points from the upcoming race, the chances of Zaqhwan adding a third Asian title to his resume will dwindle at the final round. “Like everyone else, my target is to claim the double win in Sepang. If I can achieve that target, we will be able to take the ASB1000 title to the final round in Buriram. Unlike many of the other riders on the ASB1000 grid, I cannot count on a team mate for race strategies to guard my flanks. As the sole rider in my team, I just need to go hard and go fast.”

SEPANG TO BE 600cc TITLE DECIDER

Nothing short of a disaster could prevent Yamaha Thailand Racing Team’s Peerapong Boonlert from lifting the SuperSports 600cc title at the penultimate leg of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in Sepang. An 80-point margin at the front of the pack has given Peerapong an almost unassailable advantage. Even if his closest competitor, Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin were to win both Race 1 and Race 2 on homeground, Peerapong will only need top five finishes in both races to seal the deal.

TOUGH CALL ON THE CARDS FOR FADLY AND MANUAL TECH KYT KAWASAKI IN SEPANG

Andy Muhammad Fadly narrowly avoided the second equalizer rule (another 500rpm cut) at Round 5 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship at the Zhuhai International Circuit. As Fadly prepares for the penultimate leg at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend, team Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki strategists will once again be faced with yet another tough call – to bite the bullet and take the second equalizer in the hopes of extending Fadly’s championship lead or take the gamble of losing Fadly’s hard-won title lead. Under the Asia Production 250cc rules, anytime a rider among the top five gains a 25-point lead, the first equalizer in the form of a 500rpm cut will be imposed. Similarly, if a 50-point gap opens up among any of the riders within the top five, a second equalizer (another 500rpm cut) will be applied. Astra Honda Racing Team’s Lucky Hendriansya, currently the only rider free of the equalizer rule among the top five, has inadvertently become the benchmark for team strategies in the Asia Production 250cc class. As the title chase stands, Andy Fadly leads the pack with 145 points, Irfan Ardiansyah is looking threatening in second overall with 140 points while Lucky is fifth overall with 97 points. Fadly leads Irfan by only 5 points while the 48-point gap between Fadly and Lucky’s positions has placed the Kawasaki rider between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

RAFID IN WITH A CHANCE FOR TITLE CHASE

For long time fans of the Asian racing scene, Rafid Topan Sucipto’s double win in Zhuhai last month came as no surprise. Those who had watched him win the Asian Underbone 115cc title in 2011 would know the true capabilities of this Indonesian rider. Come Round 6 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship at the Sepang Circuit on September 21 and 22, the onus is now on Rafid and the Bike Corner SYS KYT Racing Team to prove that he is really back in winning form. The 50 points he raked in from Zhuhai has boosted Rafid’s standings on the AP250 ladder. The Bike Corner SYS KYT Racing Team along with the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team are the only two privateer teams in an AP250 field dominated by the factory outfits. Currently 10th on the standings, Rafid trails championship leader Andy Muhammad Fadly by 67 points. There are four more races left in the 2019 calendar. Mathematically at least, Rafid still has a chance to join the title chase. Another double win in Sepang could possibly push the Bike Corner SYS KYT Racing Team rider into the top five. Free of the equalizer rule that had been applied on five of the top six riders, Rafid stands a fighting chance of more podium finishes in Round 6.

MALAYSIAN PRIDE AT STAKE IN SEPANG

Just as the Indonesian riders view the Sentul Circuit as their playground, so does the Malaysian riders with the Sepang International Circuit. At the 2019 season opener, the Malaysian camp had been expected to dominate the UB150 podium especially. When Filipino riders McKinley Kyle Paz and Fernando Masato claimed the win in both Race 1 and Race 2, it was a painful blow for the local heroes. Fortunately for the Malaysian riders, they will get a chance for a do-over when the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship returns to Sepang for Round 6 on September 21 and 22. At Sepang, the Malaysians will make up 50% of the 35-rider UB150 grid. UMA Racing Yamaha Maju Motor Asia Team’s Mohd Akid Aziz will be in the thick of the action as he challenges McKinley Kyle Paz for the leadership position in the class. Both riders have picked up two wins apiece in the previous four rounds. Akid trails McKinley by only four points. However, in the case of Underbone racing, numerical advantage can sometimes become a strategical nightmare. With so many bikes out on track, threading one’s way through the charging horde in the final few corners of the race can be challenging. Wily seasoned campaigners like Ahmad Fazli Sham, his younger brother Ahmad Fazrul Sham (wildcard) and championship mainstay Mohd Affendi Rosli can be expected to throw up obstacles of their own in their quest for the top step of the homeground podium. With the Malaysian national day celebrations only a few weeks ago, fans can expect to see their favourite Malaysian riders amp up the level of competition in Sepang.

UPHILL BATTLE AHEAD FOR WAWAN WELLO

SND Factory Racing Rapido rider Wawan Wello will face an uphill battle to get back into the UB150 title chase. Wawan led the pack into Round 5 in China, but saw his 12-point lead evaporate following a disastrous weekend at the Zhuhai International Circuit. Coming into the penultimate round in Sepang, the Indonesian rider is now trailing by 24 points in fifth overall. Three DNF results in a row has checked Wawan’s upward trajectory. With only two rounds and four races left on the calendar, he will need a slew of podium finishes to make up for lost ground. The stakes are high for Wawan. He is still the best performing Indonesian rider in the UB150 class, as well as the sole Honda representative among the top-10.

McKINLEY RARING TO GO AFTER YAMAHA VR46 MASTER CAMP

A week in Italy training at the Yamaha VR46 Master Camp has Underbone 150cc leader McKinley Kyle Paz raring to go for Round 6 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. McKinley will return to the Sepang International Circuit, the scene of his first ARRC win that put him on course for the title hunt. The young Filipino rider, who currently leads the UB150 with 95 points in the bag, was part of a group of young Asian riders sent to the Rossi camp for further exposure. These include Malaysian Mohd Alif Ashraf Tahiruddin and Yamaha AP250cc riders Sawapol Nillapong and Suttipat Patchareetorn. This has been an on-going initiative by Yamaha. McKinley and co were the eighth group of Asian riders to train at the VR46 Master Camp.
