ADAM IMPERIOUS IN RACE 2

The start of the SS600 Race 2 was red flagged following multiple crashes in the opening lap. Soichiro Minamimoto, Ahmad Afif Amran, Rei Toshima, and Ratthapong Wilairot were caught out in separate incidences by a few oil spill left on the track following the AP250 race earlier. Thankfully, the riders walked away from the crashes without serious injuries. The Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing Team did a phenomenal job turning Minamimoto’s bike around in time for him to rejoin the grid 15 minutes later. Race 2 was re-started with the original 10 laps cut down eight. Straight off the bat, the Malaysian riders’ expertise at the 5.5km Sepang International Circuit was hard to beat. 2018 SuperSports 600cc champion Ratthapong Wilairot gained the early lead on Lap 1 but dropped down to P5 within the space of a lap when Azroy Hakeem came charging to the front with Adam Norrodin, Ibrahim Norrodin and Helmi Azman in tow. The remainder of the SS600 Race 2 turned into an all-Malaysian affair at the front, pitting the Yamahas of the PACHI ZK Racing against the Hondas of the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team. Adam Norrodin led from Lap 5 to the last corner, indifferent to the pressure piled on him by the chasing trio. Adam barely missed a step even as Ibrahim tried to pull off an ambitious last lap-last corner overtaking move on him. Unfazed, Adam raced to the finish line to claim his first win of the season with 17’36.715s. Ibrahim, in contrast, fell victim to his own reckless move. The younger Norrodin sibling low-sided out of the race within meters of the finish line. Instead of a ZK Racing 1-2, the incident handed the final two podium positions to Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Helmi Azman. Ratthapong Wilairot improved on his finishing position in Race 2. The Thai Yamaha rider closed his weekend in fifth. Ramdan Rosli crossed the finish line in sixth followed by Soichiro Minamimoto, McKinley Kyle Paz, Sota Furuyama, Ahmad Yudhistira and Troy Alberto. AZROY PUTS BOON SIEW HONDA BACK IN WINNING FORM

Honda rider Azroy Hakeem Anuar has succeeded in putting the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team back in winning form in the SuperSports 600cc category.   Earlier in the day, the Norrodin brothers continued to dominate the proceedings in the SS600 qualifier despite stiff resistance from 2018 SuperSports 600cc champion, Ratthapong Wilairot. As expected, the closing minutes of the qualifying saw frantic changes at the top of the leaderboard with this season’s front runners vying for the coveted front row with the aid of the rear soft compound tyre.   Adam Norrodin sealed the pole position with a fastest lap of 2’09.402s. After a slow start in free practice, Ratthapong Wilairot popped up to claim P2 with 2’09.499s and relegated Ibrahim Norrodin’s best qualifying time of 2’09.706s, to P3.   After a strong showing in the first day of practice, the Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team looked have hit a snag when both Helmi Azman and Azroy Hakeem Anuar qualified sixth and seventh respectively.   However, the second row start was no deterrent for the two determined Honda riders who only needed a single lap to wade into the front group.   Adam Norrodin had the first half of the race firmly under control but crashed out from the lead on Lap 6.   Helmi Azman took full advantage of Adam’s crash to charge into the lead, with Azroy and Ahmad Afif Amran in tow. While the three were engrossed in their tussle for the lead, Ibrahim Norrodin caught up and turned the final lap into a four-way fight.   But there was no going past Azroy Hakeem Anuar who put up a commanding performance at the front to pick up his first SuperSports 600cc win with 21’53.229s. It would also be the first win for the Boon Siew Honda camp since Zaqhwan’s last victory in 2017.   Behind Azroy, Ahmad Afif Amran showed remarkable improvement when he clinched his first SS600 podium in second place with 21’53.288s. Ibrahim Norrodin pipped Helmi Azman to the last spot on the podium with 21’53.532s.   Helmi Azman and Soichiro Minamimoto rounded up the top five followed by Yusuke Nakamura in sixth. Adam Norrodin recovered from his crash and was seventh across the line in Race 1.   SuperSports 600cc debutants McKinley Kyle Paz and Troy Alberto put in creditable performances in their maiden race with both finishing within the top-10.     SS600: Top 5 Qualifying Results   Adam Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                        2’09.402s Ratthapong Wilairot (THA) (Yamaha)                2’09.499s Ibrahim Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                    2’09.706s Ahmad Afif Amran (MAS) (Yamaha)                   2’09.713s Soichiro Minamimoto (JPN) (Yamaha)               2’09.975s     SS600: Top 5 Race 1 Results   Azroy Hakeem Anuar (MAS) (Honda)                 21’53.229s Ahmad Afif Amran (MAS) (Yamaha)                   21’53.288s Ibrahim Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                    21’53.532s Helmi Azman (MAS) (Honda)                              21’53.608s Soichiro Minamimoto (JPN) (Yamaha)               22’05.142s

BATTLE OF THE MALAYSIANS IN THE SS600

The SuperSports 600cc class looks set to be a battle of the Malaysians, especially in the season opener as the Sepang experts came out to play. PACHI ZK Racing’s Adam Norrodin continues to top the timesheets, leading with a best time of 2’09.736s.   Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team duo Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Helmi Azman also clocked within the same second with 2’09.899s and 2’09.918s respectively.   Ahmad Afif Amran from the YAMAHA GEN BLU Racing Team made it an all-Malaysian top four with 2’10.220s, followed by Soichiro Minamimoto from the Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing Team.   After a strong showing in the pre-season tests, Ibrahim Norrodin had been particularly low-key as the season opener officially got under way. Ibrahim checked in sixth fastest in the class with 2’10.517s.   SS600 senior riders Ratthapong Wilairot and Ahmad Yudhistira are still biding their time. Ratthapong was seventh fastest with 2’10.569s while Yudhistira was 13th with 2’11.848s.   2019 Underbone 150 champion McKinley Kyle Paz will need more time to adjust to 600cc racing. The Filipino wonderboy was 11th fastest of the day with 2’11.482s.     AP250: Top 5 Practice Results 2019 Lap Record: 2’09.712 – Kasma Daniel (MAS) (Yamaha)   Adam Norrodin (MAS) (Yamaha)                        2’09.736s Azroy Hakeem Anuar (MAS) (Honda)                 2’09.899s Helmi Azman (MAS) (Honda)                              2’09.918s Ahmad Afif Amran (MAS) (Yamaha)                   2’10.220s Soichiro Minamimoto (JPN) (Yamaha)               2’10.469s

TIME TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE SS600 QUALIFYING

Expect last-minute time attacks in the SuperSports 600cc category this season as ARRC official tyre supplier Dunlop brings a new element to their tyre allocations.   Last year, the 600cc riders crafted their qualifying and race strategies around an allocation with 5 medium compound fronts and 5 medium rears. Now in 2020, the riders find an additional soft rear added to that allocation.   Here’s the comparison breakdown for easy reference:   TYRE MODEL/COMPOUND 2019 ALLOCATION 2020 ALLOCATION KR149 (Front) (Medium) 5 5 KR133 (Rear) (Medium) 5 5 KR133 (Rear) (Soft) 0 1   The outcome of the amendment was immediately apparent as Adam Norrodin from PACHI ZK Racing punched in a new SS600 lap record during the pre-season tests.     QUOTE: KENTARO KOBAYASHI, MANAGEMENT AND SERVICE ENGINEER, SUMITOMO RUBBER INDUSTRIES LTD (DUNLOP)   “The SuperSports 600cc class was supposed to be more developmental in nature. But the teams have requested to make the class more competitive. As a result, the age limit in the SS600 (25 years) was removed.   This is Dunlop’s contribution to make the SuperSports 600cc more exciting and more competitive. We can now expect to see last minute time attacks in the closing minutes of the qualifier.”

ADAM SETS NEW SEPANG BENCHMARK IN THE SUPERSPORTS 600 CLASS

PACHI ZK Racing’s Adam Norrodin has set a new Sepang benchmark in the SuperSports 600cc class when he bested Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin’s 2019 lap record by 0.689 seconds. The Malaysian rider posted 2’09.029s in Practice 4 during the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship pre-season tests.   Top contenders for the 2020 crown are beginning to emerge after two days of nonstop testing at the 5.5km Sepang International Circuit, with teams PACHI ZK Racing and Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team identified as early favourites ahead of the season opener.   The two teams seemed to have the front row on lock down with Adam, his younger brother Ibrahim Norrodin, as well as Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team’s Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Helmi Azman consistently lapping within the top four in the class.   YAMAHA GEN BLU Racing Team’s Ahmad Afif Amran closed the two day pre-season test as the fifth quickest in class. Afif’s best time was 2’10.547s while SS600 rookie McKinley Kyle Paz was 13th fastest with 2’12.552s.   Senior SS600 riders Ratthapong Wilairot and Ahmad Yudhistira have yet to make their moves… for now. Ratthapong posted sixth overall with 2’10.610s and Yudhistira seventh with 2’10.846s.   Japanese duo Yusuke Nakamura and Soichiro Minamimoto from Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing placed eighth and ninth fastest in the tests. NORRODIN BROTHERS TOPS FIRST DAY OF PRE-SEASON

Siblings Mohd Ibrahim Norrodin and Mohd Adam Norrodin are living up to their reputations as Sepang experts as the first day of pre-season tests got underway for the SS600 class at the Sepang International Circuit. The two brothers, racing under the PACHI ZK Racing banner, are proteges of the SIC talent development programme and have spent countless hours honing their art at the 5.5km Malaysian circuit. The duo were easily a second faster than the competition, despite missing out on Practice 1. Ibrahim was the faster of the two, with 2’10.515s against elder brother Adam’s 2’10.867s. Boon Siew HONDA Racing Team’s Helmi Azman and Azroy Hakeem Anuar were also adept at turning their mileage at the Sepang Circuit into fast laps. The two Honda riders posted 3rd and 4th fastest respectively with 2’11.325s and 2’11.364s. Kasma Daniels’ lap record, 2’09.712s, remains untouched. Meanwhile, all eyes were on Ratthapong Wilairot and Ahmad Yudhistira, both returning to the SS600 after a season in the ASB1000 premiere class. However, the two experienced riders were clearly taking their time to get their bikes into race pace. Ratthapong posted a best time of 2’11.595s while Yudhis clocked 2’12.979s.

HIGH PROFILE COMEBACKS AND NEWBIES IN 2020 SS600

High profile comebacks and newcomers are the order of the day in the SuperSports 600cc (SS600) category this year. Even before the inclusion of wildcards, the SS600 grid has expanded by 35% with the influx of new teams – many of them bringing exciting comebacks and talented raw talent into the class. With the departure of Peerapong Boonlert to Europe, Ratthapong Wilairot will shoulder the responsibility of team YAMAHA Thailand Racing Team’s title defense. The 2018 SS600 Asian champion is expected to square off against the equally seasoned Ahmad Yudhistira, who is also making his own 600cc comeback. However the 600cc title chase is not expected to be confined between the two senior riders. ZK Racing has recently announced that it will pair talented siblings Adam Norrodin and Ibrahim Norrodin for 2020. The two brothers are known as Sepang experts and can be expected to mount a serious challenge for the crown. Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing, owned by former ARRC rider Makoto Inagaki, will be making a return following a short hiatus. The team has earmarked Yusuke Nakamura and Soichiro Minamimoto for this season’s challenge. Japanese team SpeedHeart DOGFIGHTRACING JP YAMAHA brings more Japanese talent into the class with Rie Toshima in their line-up. Malaysian Ahmad Afif Amran will team up with young Filipino talent McKinley Kyle Paz in the YAMAHA GEN BLU Racing Team. Of course, Muklada Sarapuech’s first official SS600 race will draw much attention. The A.P. HONDA Racing Team rider is expected to continue breaking records in the 600cc class. YAMAHA Racing Indonesia’s Faerozi Toreqottullah along with Troy Alberto from team Honda Philippines Okada Manila Access Plus Racing are also expected to be in the spotlight. ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team will pair Ramdan Rosli with newcomer Nazirul Izzat Bahauddin in the SS600 class. MUKLADA CONTINUES TO BREAK GENDER BARRIERS

AP Honda Racing Thailand’s Muklada Sarapuech continues to break gender barriers in the male-dominated Asian motorsports arena when the team confirmed her full season SuperSports 600cc entry in the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship.   Although there had been a number of female riders entering as wildcards in the 600 class, their appearances had been few and far in between. Muklada is the first to commit to a full season.   The 27-year-old Thai rider has been defying gender norms since she first earned her racing stripes in the Asian series. In 2015, Muklada won the Asia Dream Cup title and became the first female rider to lift an ARRC crown.   Since that historic win, Muklada has gone from strength to strength. She finished 10th overall in her first year in the Asia Production 250cc class, moved up to seventh overall in 2018, and ended the 2019 season in fourth with six podium finishes and two wins.   Muklada will partner 24-year-old Passawit Thitivararak for the AP Honda Racing Thailand’s 600cc campaign. This will be Passawit’s third season in the class. He finished sixth overall in 2019.   Piyawat Patoomyos will lead the AP Honda Racing Thailand’s charge in the AP250 this season. Piyawat will be joined by rookie Kantapat Yakantai, a graduate from the Honda Thailand Talent Cup.
