AZLAN HAS NO ILLUSION ABOUT SEASON 2020

ASB1000 defending champion Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman is under no illusion about just how challenging the year ahead is going to be. The Malaysian rider who entered the history books as the first ASB1000 champion in 2019, has renewed his partnership with the ONEXOX BMW TKKR SAG Team for the 2020 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Even as Azlan prepares to don the green-and-black of TKKR for one more season, there had been many changes within the team’s structure and also in the ASB1000 class itself. Azlan’s success in 2019 had brought BMW factory support to the ONEXOX BMW TKKR SAG Team. Along with the factory support comes a team mate, WSBK rider Markus Reiterberger who will certainly be arriving with his eyes on the main prize. “I’m very sure the 2020 season will be a fight from start to finish. Look at the quality of bikes and riders listed in the Entry List. We have WSBK riders like Markus and Lorenzo Zanetti entering the Asian race. Domestically, my compatriot Zaqhwan Zaidi will be competing astride the latest Honda CBR1000RR R Fireblade,” said Azlan. In fact, nearly half the 15-rider ASB1000 grid will be competing on the latest bike models. Zaqhwan’s team mate Gerry Salim will also be similarly equipped. Riders from the factory Yamahas – Broc Parkes, Yuki Ito, Apiwat Wongthananon and Anupab Sarmoon will take to the tarmac with the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M. For Team BMW, Azlan and his team mate Markus will be competing on the 2020 BMW S1000 RR. Azlan will need to bank on his strong track record at the 5.5km Sepang International Circuit to keep his winning edge. The BMW rider had won three out of four ASB1000 races held in Sepang to date.

DUCATI TEST RIDER LORENZO ZANETTI JOINS ACCESS PLUS RACING-OKADA MANILA FOR ASB1000 SEASON OPENER AT SEPANG

Access Plus Racing-Okada Manila has confirmed that Lorenzo Zanetti will join their ASB1000 lineup this weekend at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The Ducati test rider was called as a stand in for Federico Sandi who’ll be unavailable during the Asia Road Racing Championship’s (ARRC) season opener on March 6 to 8. The Italian is a test rider for Ducati and contributed to the development of Panigale V4R for competition, thus making him a fitting substitute for Sandi. He brings with him over two decades’ worth of experience, with six seasons in the 125GP World Championship and nine in the Superbike World Championship where he landed 16 career podium finishes. With his vast knowledge on the Panigale V4R, Zanetti aims to provide reliable feedback to the team’s technicians. He also looks forward to bring the fight to the front on his ARRC debut with teammate Timothy Joseph “TJ” Alberto. The Asia Road Racing Championship’s 2020 calendar kicks off with a Pre-Season Test from March 2 to 4 at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The first of seven rounds then follows from March 6 to 8 on the same venue. Lorenzo Zanetti: “It’s a pleasure to join the first round of ARRC this 2020 with Access Plus Racing. When the team and Ducati offered me this opportunity, I immediately accepted the offer. Although it’s not easy to come to the series just for one race, I believe that it’s possible to fight for a good position with help from Ducati. Thank you to the team for allowing me to race with them in Malaysia.” Access Plus Racing-Okada Manila is sponsored by Okada Manila, Essenza, Macbeth, Öhlins Philippines, AELLA, Lv8, and Standard Insurance, with Ducati Philippines for the team’s entry in ASB1000. HIGH PROFILE COMEBACKS AND NEWBIES IN 2020 SS600

High profile comebacks and newcomers are the order of the day in the SuperSports 600cc (SS600) category this year. Even before the inclusion of wildcards, the SS600 grid has expanded by 35% with the influx of new teams – many of them bringing exciting comebacks and talented raw talent into the class. With the departure of Peerapong Boonlert to Europe, Ratthapong Wilairot will shoulder the responsibility of team YAMAHA Thailand Racing Team’s title defense. The 2018 SS600 Asian champion is expected to square off against the equally seasoned Ahmad Yudhistira, who is also making his own 600cc comeback. However the 600cc title chase is not expected to be confined between the two senior riders. ZK Racing has recently announced that it will pair talented siblings Adam Norrodin and Ibrahim Norrodin for 2020. The two brothers are known as Sepang experts and can be expected to mount a serious challenge for the crown. Akeno Speed YAMAHA Racing, owned by former ARRC rider Makoto Inagaki, will be making a return following a short hiatus. The team has earmarked Yusuke Nakamura and Soichiro Minamimoto for this season’s challenge. Japanese team SpeedHeart DOGFIGHTRACING JP YAMAHA brings more Japanese talent into the class with Rie Toshima in their line-up. Malaysian Ahmad Afif Amran will team up with young Filipino talent McKinley Kyle Paz in the YAMAHA GEN BLU Racing Team. Of course, Muklada Sarapuech’s first official SS600 race will draw much attention. The A.P. HONDA Racing Team rider is expected to continue breaking records in the 600cc class. YAMAHA Racing Indonesia’s Faerozi Toreqottullah along with Troy Alberto from team Honda Philippines Okada Manila Access Plus Racing are also expected to be in the spotlight. ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team will pair Ramdan Rosli with newcomer Nazirul Izzat Bahauddin in the SS600 class. Ramdan, who struggled with consistency issues in 2019, has the potential to be a title contender this season.

EXPECT A MORE COMPETITIVE GRID AS AP250 EQUALIZER RULE EXTENDS TO TOP SIX

Asia Production 250cc (AP250) fans can look forward to an even more nail-biting title chase this season as the Equalizer Rule is extended to the top six riders in the standings. The new rule, which was implemented in 2019, had been successful in keeping the championship wide open by adding yet another level of tactics into the teams’ strategy. The extension of the Equalizer Rule to the top six will mean that every time one of the top five riders acquire a 25-point lead over the other competitors in the top six, the first equalizer, a 500rpm reduction to the rev limit, will be applied. A second equalizer will come into play once a 50-points lead had been achieved, followed by a third equalizer if required. As the teams confirm their entries for the 2020 season, the 22-rider AP250 grid has become one of the most diverse categories in the Asia Road Racing Championship with entries from Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand.

UB150: 27 RIDERS REPRESENTING 5 ASIAN NATIONS

The Underbone 150cc (UB150) will still be the biggest race class as Season 25 of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship opens at the Sepang International Circuit this March 7 and 8. At the time of writing, the provisional UB150 entry lists 27 riders from five Asian nations confirmed for Round 1.     Riders from the host country will make up 45% of the grid. However, as McKinley Kyle Paz and Fernando Masato proved in the opening leg of 2019, a numbers advantage does not guarantee race wins. Indonesia will be represented by eight riders while Kyle’s success last year has boosted Filipino entry into the class. Masato and Kerwin Chang will race under the UMA Racing Yamaha PHILIPPINE team banner this year while debutant 4S1M YAMAHA Racing team brings John Emerson Inguito into the fray. Thailand’s focus clearly remains on the full-frame classes. Until the championship visits the Chang International Circuit later in the year, Peerapong Luiboonpengwill be the sole Thai representative in the class. No Defending Champion In Sight Over the past two years, the Underbone 150 champion had consistently moved on to the SuperSports 600cc. As McKinley Kyle Paz joins Mohd Helmi Azman in the SS600, the 2020 UB150 title chase will start with no defending champion on the grid. Former Underbone champions Ahmad Fazli Sham (2004, 2005), Mohd Affendi Rosli (2009), Gupita Kresna Wardhana (2014, 2015), Wahyu Aji Trilaksana (2016), and Mohd Akid Aziz (2017) are still the early favourites at the start of the season. Here’s a recap of their key stats to date: RIDER UNDERBONE STARTS CAREER WINS PODIUMS POLE SEPANG START SEPANG WIN SEPANG POLE Affendi Rosli 136 9 31 0 39 2 0 Ahmad Fazli Sham 112 15 26 4 32 5 2 Gupita Kresna 94 6 23 9 14 0 0 Wahyu Aji 60 6 21 5 4 0 0 Akid Aziz 38 5 13 3 4 2 2 Young Bucks To Look Out For While the former champions hold a slight advantage by dint of their experience, the emergence of young riders able to buck the trend is a huge factor for the UB150’s popularity. YAMAHA Racing Indonesia’s Aldi Satya Mahendra had given us a hint of prowess in 2019. Faiz Zekri from the ONEXOX TKKR SAG outfit had also popped up on the radar with his winning ways. Wawan Wello would have given Kyle a run for his money last year if not for a series of unfortunate incidences while Haziq Fairueswould be looking to step out of Akid’s shadows.

ARRC SEASON 25

It’s season 25 for the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in 2020. What began as a 3-round event concentrated in South East Asia, has now straddled the entire Asian continent. Indonesia’s Sentul Circuit came a close second with 133 races followed by 108 races in Thailand. With Malaysia leading the list as the host country with the highest number of races, it is only natural that the Malaysian riders top the list of entries over the past 25 years. No. of Races by Host Country: 1 Malaysia 314 2 Indonesia 222 3 Japan 152 4 Thailand 109 5 Australia 49 6 Hong Kong 32 7 India 32 8 Philippines 28 9 Singapore 25 10 China 24 Malaysian riders has also scored the highest number of race wins, leading the list by 181 wins, a success rate of 58%. No. of Race Wins by Nationality: No Country Wins 1 Malaysia 181 2 Japan 146 3 Indonesia 141 4 Thailand 106 5 Australia 12   In looking through the statistics accumulated over the course of 25 years, two riders in particular, stand out. To our long-time partner Dunlop, Asian riders are where they are today thanks to your support. We would like to thank the motorcycle manufacturers as well as our many corporate partners who have played a crucial role in the development of Asian riders. We are also grateful to our circuit partners and we hope to be able to continue working together towards the future. ACCESS PLUS RACING PARTNERS WITH OKADA MANILA

Access Plus Racing partners with Okada Manila to enter ASB1000 & SS600 in Asia Road Racing Championship Coming on the back of a successful debut season, Access Plus Racing confirms its return to the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) this 2020 with an expanded lineup that now includes entries in both ASB1000 and SS600. The Philippine-based team also welcomes Okada Manila, which was recently awarded the Forbes Travel Guide five star rating, as its new partner and will be running as Access Plus Racing-Okada Manila for the upcoming season. The team will again enter two Panigale V4Rs from Ducati Philippines in the ARRC’s top category – the Asia Super Bike 1000 (ASB1000). Headlining their lineup is two-time Philippine Superbike Novice and Intermediate Class Champion TJ Alberto. The 22-year-old is a seasoned rider with racing experience in the Italian Superbike Championship and World SBK Superstock 1000. As the lone Filipino on the ASB1000 grid, he competed in all seven ARRC rounds last year and consistently finished in the points with a best 6th place finish during the season. He will then be reunited with Federico Sandi who now comes back as a full-time entry in 2020. The Italian rider brought with him a wealth of experience during his two wildcard appearances last year, helping the team close the gap to the front runners. He also asserted the Panigale V4R as a strong title contender with his impressive performances at Sepang and Buriram where he fought for outright race wins. New for 2020 is the addition of a SuperSports 600 (SS600) entry with Troy Alberto onboard a Honda CBR600RR from Honda Philippines Inc. Like his older brother TJ, Troy is also a two-time Philippine Superbike Class Champion. And despite his young age at only 18 years old, he has raced in the FIM CEV European Talent Cup, Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup, and most recently at the Honda Thailand Talent Cup where he finished on the podium on four occasions. Carved on 44 hectares of picturesque oceanfront, Okada Manila is a luxurious integrated casino resort and hotel complex located on the Entertainment City gaming strip in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Its partnership with Access Plus Racing will see Okada Manila’s branding and purple livery featured on the team’s ASB1000 and SS600 motorbikes, as well as all three riders’ suits throughout the ARRC’s 2020 season. The Asia Road Racing Championship’s upcoming race calendar consists of seven rounds with two races per event. Its curtain raiser will take place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia this March, followed by races in Australia, Japan, China, and conclude in Thailand in November. Toti Alberto, Team Principal: “We’re thrilled to be back in the ARRC after a learning season last year. The whole team is looking forward to racing again with TJ and Federico in ASB1000 with the addition of Troy in SS600. We’d also like to welcome Okada Manila as our new partner for the upcoming season and race together under Access Plus Racing-Okada Manila.” Access Plus Racing-Okada Manila is sponsored by Okada Manila, Essenza, AELLA, Öhlins Philippines, and Dickies Philippines, with Ducati Philippines for the team’s entry in ASB1000 and Honda Philippines Inc. for SS600.
