Come the ARRC Official Tyre Test on December 4, the Yamaha Thailand Racing Team will be putting newly crowned SuperSports 600cc Champion Ratthapong Wilairot and Anupab Sarmoon through their paces astride the Yamaha R1. It will be a brand new challenge for Ratthapong Wilairot, coming straight on the heels of his SuperSports 600cc triumph at the same circuit. Wilairot has shown dramatic improvement since he donned the Yamaha blue early this year. By 2019, Ratthapong will be 27 years old while Anupab will turn 26. THITIPONG PREPARES FOR ARRC COMEBACK

Thai ace rider Thitipong Warokorn is preparing for a full ARRC comeback with the start of the ASB1000 class in 2019. Warokorn, a protégé of the ARRC, had left the championship a few seasons ago when he raced full season in the Moto2 class of the MotoGP in 2014 and 2015. Since his return to Asia, Warokorn had moved from Honda to Kawasaki. Apart from a few wildcard entries when the ARRC lands at the Chang International Circuit, Warokorn had concentrated his efforts on the national racing scene and had dominated the Buriram Superbike Championship and Thailand Championship for two consecutive years (2017 and 2018). When met at the Chang International Circuit a day prior to the Official Tyre Test, Thitipong said that he was looking forward to making a full comeback. “2019 will be a brand new year in more ways than one. A new crew, new bike, and new race class to look forward to.”

ACCESS PLUS RACING: WHERE RACING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

Among the teams present at the ARRC Official Tyre Test at the Chang International Circuit is a unique family team run by former rider Tito Alberto. Fans from the Philippines would be familiar with the name Access Plus Racing Team. Owned and run by Tito and his wife Joy, the team has been an active part of the motorsports scene in the Philippines since 1994. Tito himself was a former rider with multiple national titles under his belt. He had once raced wildcard in the Series Production 250cc class of the Asia Road Racing Championship in 1996 when the championship visited the Batangas Racing Circuit. Fast forward to 2018, the Alberto family continues their passion for racing with both sons TJ (Timothy Joseph) and Troy now making forays into the international arena. 21-year-old TJ took part in the Stock1000 class of the 2018 World Superbike Championship while younger son Troy took part in the Asia Talent Cup and Thailand Talent Cup. The Access Plus Racing Team has brought a 9-man crew to Buriram. Over the next two days, TJ will be taking part in the Official Tyre Test as preparations for a possible entry into the ASB1000 class next year.

SUPERSPORTS 600 2019: AGE-CAPPED TO 25 YEARS

When the 2019 season of the ARRC gets underway in March next year, the new ASB1000 (Superbike) will take over as the showpiece class of the Asian series. Even at the 2018 season finale at the Chang International Circuit, the talk around the paddock had continuously revolved around plans, discussions, and speculations about the new race category. What then happens to the SuperSports 600cc? The class which was first introduced into the ARRC roster in 2000 will become a step-up class for younger riders whose skills have evolved past the AP250 but not yet ready for the litre category. As such, the class will impose an age-cap and restricted only for riders aged 25 years and younger. However, certain exceptions will be created to allow the class to grow. “The idea is to create a racing environment that will encourage growth and participation from countries where the sport of motorcycle racing is still in its developmental stage,” said Ron Hogg, Director of Two Wheels Motor Racing (TWMR), the race promoters of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Put together, the four race categories in 2019 will form its own rider development ecosystem within the ARRC itself.   The Malaysian-based Two Wheels Motor Racing is no stranger to creating a dynamic and thriving motorsports industry that serves the greater good of the sport. Back home in Malaysia, the TWMR crew runs the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship (now in its 25thseason) and the Mini Cub Prix – providing structured racing platforms for riders from as young as 6 years of age.

Top Malaysian rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman will be teaming up with the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team as they forge ahead with preparations for the incoming ASB1000 class in the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. The 34-year-old rider will lead the team’s assault astride the BMW S1000 RR. “Azlan is one of the best riders we’ve got in Malaysia right now. It was amazing to me that he had not been snapped up by any of the factory teams yet, so we jumped on the chance to have such a high-calibre rider in our team,” said Bobie Farid, Team Principal of the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team. “No other rider can equal the depth of experience that Azlan will be bringing with him” said Bobie, referring to Azlan’s long and successful racing career that had taken him from the Malaysian Cub Prix Championship to the top of the Asia Road Racing Championship and subsequently to the Moto2 class of the MotoGP. For his part, Azlan will be joining a burgeoning team that had been on a rapid expansion path. By 2019, the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team will field bikes in every class of the Malaysian Cub Prix Championship and the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. The team is also considering making their debut in the Spanish National Championship (CEV).

NEXTGEN MOTORSPORTS PREPARES FOR THE NEXT SEASON

Australian team Nextgen Motorsports, along with 3-times ASBK Champion Glenn Allerton have arrived at the Chang International Circuit to start preparations for their assault on the newly formed ASB1000 (Asian Superbike class).   Wayne Hepburn, NextGen Motorsports Team Manager:   It is NGM’s intention to form new partnerships with vested local business and be a front runner in the exciting new class . We have flown a full race set up to Thailand with our current model bikes to acquaint Glenn and the Team to the Circuit.   As we will be competing on Dunlop Control Tyres in the ARRC, it’s a must to start now and the 2 day tyre test after the final ARRC round is a perfect opportunity.   We know how important this test is, as NGM is unknown in Asia which is making building partnerships very difficult.   NGM is a group of passionate bike racing fanatics that do whatever we can within our means to race at the highest level it can. Part of our struggle is we are very good at the racing side of running a race team but very poor at finding external funding to help us be even better.   In saying that as a team we have done more than a lot of the manufacturer-based teams in Australia, all funded with passion . We want to be here with a signed 3 year contract and look forward to being the best Superbike team in the ARRC . We have plans to field smaller capacity machines and riders with the possibility of having a seat for a competitive local rider.   In Australia we are the only team to give fully funded rides to up and coming racers . The norm would be that rider would have to pay for the seat. This is why we struggle because we put the racing and riders before the business. It may not be the smartest course but we try to give opportunities to riders that they otherwise couldn’t afford.   We are very confident in our bike, the BMW S1000RR, our team members and especially our rider Glenn. We wouldn’t be taking on this huge commitment if we didn’t think we would win . BMW has a new S1000RR just launched and all the information we have so far is that it will be an incredible machine and we eagerly await its arrival . We will start the season on the current model which is still very capable of winning.   All I can say is we are very excited and hopefully our on track performance does the talking for us.

ARRC BREAKS NEW GROUND IN SOUTH KOREA

The FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) continues to break new grounds as it seeks to promote the sport of motorcycle racing in the Asian region. In 2019, the ARRC will follow up on this year’s successful Australian debut with a venture into South Korea. At the time of writing, the race is provisionally set to be held from August 9 to 11, 2019 at the Korea International Circuit (KIC) in Yeongam. The Formula One circuit has hosted numerous regional car races since its inception in 2010. The Asia Road Racing Championship will be the first international motorcycle road racing event to be held at the KIC. “Over the past few years, the Asia Road Racing Championship have been working hard towards forging mutually beneficial partnerships with other Asian federations, promoters, and circuit owners. We believe that by working together, we would be able to better serve the needs of the motorcycle racing industry in this region,” said Ron Hogg, Director of Two Wheels Motor Racing, the race promoters of the Asia Road Racing Championship. “We are particularly excited to become the first international motorcycle racing event to be held in South Korea. For that, we would like to thank the members of the Korea Motorcycle Federation, especially KMF President Mr. Lee Dong Ki, who had worked hard to ensure the success of this new partnership.” The three-year agreement between all parties will see South Korea as the host venue for the ARRC from 2019 to 2021. KMF President, Mr. Lee Dong Ki added that the ARRC will be the first Road Racing event held under the FIM rules in South Korea. “I believe that this will bring a big contribution to the development of Korean motorsports, particularly motorcycle racing.”

ARRC OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES THE ASB1000

The FIM Asia Road Racing Championship officially launched its latest offering – the ASB1000 – at the Suzuka Circuit last weekend, host to Round 3 of the 2018 season.   Slated to rev off in 2019, the ASB1000 is seen as a move to ‘complete’ the Asian series which had been instrumental in the growth and development of motorcycle racing in Asia.   Quote from Ron Hogg, Director, Two Wheels Motor Racing: “We are extremely gratified that the Asia Road Racing Championship has finally reached a point where the ASB1000 class has actually become a necessity. When the series was first introduced in 1996, our mission was always to promote and develop the sport of motorcycle racing within the region. Over the decades, we have always held firm to that vision.   The ASB1000 class, as the highest level of production bike racing in the world, will complete the Asia Road Racing Championship. It will offer a single regional platform where champions graduating from their respective superbike national championships can compete.   The class will run largely on the FIM Superstock regulations. The tyres will be supported by Dunlop.   Quote from Sadahiko Matsumura, Dunlop: Dunlop is fully committed to the ASB1000 class, just as our company had been supportive of the ARRC since 1996. For the ASB1000, Dunlop will be providing 8 sets of tyres per race weekend with 2 option compounds.   The plan is to eventually offer more options to meet the needs of the various teams. Should the championship decide to implement the SuperPole, Dunlop will likewise prepare qualifying tyres for the class.   Quotation from Kendy Chan, FIM Asia: The FIM Asia is fully supportive of this move to the 1000cc class. This will inject fresh interest and growth into the Asian motorsports scene and will certainly be good from a rider development perspective.
