AKID AND IBRAHIM TO FILL IN FOR KASMA AND ADAM

Mohd Akid Aziz and Ibrahim Norrodin will be making a guest appearance in the SuperSports 600cc class. The will be their first entry into the 600cc class of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Representing two different teams, Akid and Ibrahim will be filling in for Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin and Adam Norrodin respectively. Akid is no stranger to the ARRC competition. He had won the Underbone 150cc title in 2016 and is presently eighth in the standings for the Underbone class. As the UB150 will not be racing at The Bend Motorsport Park, this has worked out well for the 21-year-old Malaysian. “I’m looking forward to my first 600cc race this weekend. It is the perfect opportunity for me to prove myself in the hopes of securing a 600cc ride in the future,” said Akid. On the other hand, this will be Ibrahim Norrodin’s official ARRC debut. The 19-year-old is the younger brother to Adam. While the elder Adam has been making headlines in his Moto3 career, Ibrahim had also proven his racing chops when he clinched the 2017 KTM Asia RC Cup title.

ZAQHWAN BRINGS ROUND 1 TO A CLIMATIC END

Round 1 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship drew to a dramatic end at the Sepang International Circuit. The weather, that had been sunny and dry all week long, took a turn for the worse just as the pit lane was about to open for the ASB1000 show closer. The rain made for an even more challenging race as none of the riders have had the opportunity to ride on the wet tyres at the Sepang Circuit. This was made even worse by the uneven rainfall around the 5.5km track. There was torrential downpour on the North Track while the South Track remained relatively dry. It was a tentative first lap as the more seasoned riders took their time gaining a better feel for the track conditions. Farid Badrul Hisham from the ONEXOX TKKR SAGRacing Team, on the other hand, had nothing to lose. Farid, who is riding as a replacement for injured Hafiq Azmi that weekend, finished sixth in Race 1. While the rest of the grid felt their way gingerly around the first two laps, Farid had pulled an 8 seconds lap at the front of the group. However, all that reckless riding around the drier parts of the track took a toll on his performance. Farid aquaplaned out of Lap 4 on Turn 4, followed soon by Ahmad Yudhistira. Farid’s crash left Yuki Ito in charge of the ASB1000 lead but he too had his fair share of problems. A broken shifter around Lap 7 adversely affected Ito’s race pace. As Ito’s focus shifted from winning the race to just finishing the race, Honda Asia Dream Racing With Showa’s Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi came riding past. Zaqhwan quickly pulled a lead at the front and took the win with 27’20.147s. 2019 championship leader Thitipong Warokorn netted the highest points haul from the weekend when he finished second with 27’23.706s while Yuki Ito settled for third place with 27’27.360s.

PEERAPONG DOUBLES DOWN ON ROUND 1

Peerapong Boonlert is the biggest winner from Round 1 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship at the Sepang Circuit. The Thai rider was virtually in a class of his own as he effortlessly snapped up a double win in the SuperSports 600cc class. A late start was no handicap for Peerapong when he dove past a late-breaking Kasma Daniel at Turn 1 to tuck in behind the leading pole sitter, Adam Norrodin. WhenAdam ran out onto the grass at Turn 4, Peerapong placed himself right on the sharp end of the 600cc grid. The Yamaha Thailand Racing Team rider rode virtually unchallenged at the head of the 14-rider group. After 10 flawless laps, Peerapong checked in with his secondwin with 21’57.152s. The bulk of the 600cc action happened within the second group with Indonesian Andi Farid Izdihar holding his own against Malaysians Helmi Azman and KasmaDaniel Kasmayudin. Adam Norrodin joined the 3-way battle in the closing laps of the race and sparked off an intense final two-lap scramble for the last two spots on the podium. Andi Farid from the Astra Honda Racing Team held off his Malaysian rivals long enough to finish the race in second place with 21’59.138s. A nifty move by KasmaDaniel Kasmayuddin gave him the last podium spot with 21’59.471s. Peerapong Boonlert leaves the Sepang Circuit with the maximum 50 points in his pocket. Kasma is second overall with 36 points and Adam Norrodin third with 29 points.

MUKLADA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN A BIG WAY

Muklada Sarapuech celebrated International Women’s Day in a big way last weekend with a comeback victory in Race 2 for Round 1 of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. The Asia Production 250cc Race 1 had been a disappointment for Muklada when mechanical gremlins haunted her back into the pits but a better outing in Race 2 more than made up for the setbacks from the earlier race. The polesitter got off to a strong start but lost the early lead to Lucky Hendriansya who was in the hunt for his double win of the weekend. Lucky led Muklada and Andy Muhammad Fadly at the front while the rest of the 25-bike grid strung out behind them. By Lap 3, the front runners had pulled a 1-second gap ahead of Awhin Sanjaya who was struggling to maintain a strong pace despite an injured shoulder. Lucky began to show signs of trouble on Lap 5. The Astra Honda Racing Team rider ran wide several times while Muklada continued to put on a silky smooth performance around the 5.5km Sepang Circuit. Andy Muhammad Fadly also almost lost touch with the group several times, but was always able to make up for lost ground. The 44.541km race came to a dramatic climax when Lucky ran wide again at Turn 14 of the final lap. Muklada and Andy dove past the Astra Honda rider and ran shoulder-to-shoulder down the back straight with Muklada in the front. Fadly broke out of the slipstream and led into the final T15 hairpin but Muklada piled on the power at the exit, sprinted past a hapless Fadly to win the chequered flag with 19’36.510s. Andy won a double podium in second place with 19’36.578s. The Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki Racing rider leads the Asia Production 250cc class with 40 points. Lucky Hendriansya was not so lucky in Race 2. His bike stalled at the last corner. After a battle well fought, Lucky was denied a second podium for the weekend. His team mate Awhin Sanjaya took P3 with 19’44.845s.

FERNANDO CLAIMS DOUBLE WIN FOR YAMAHA PHILIPPINES

In Race 1, McKinley Kyle Paz made history when he became the first rider from the Philippines to win an Underbone 150cc class at the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship.  In Race 2, Fernando Masato followed up on the previous day’s success to claim a double win for debutant Uma Racing Yamaha Philippines Team. The two ace riders from the Philippines executed their race strategy to perfection. The race flagged off with Kyle on front row and Fernando on second row. 13-year-old Indonesian Aldi Mahendra was dominant in the opening lap. Smaller and lighter than the majority of the grid, Aldi’s flying start took him straight into the lead but he was swallowed up one lap later by the horde. An 8-rider lead group had splintered off by Lap 3. The competition hotted up on the final lap. Wawan Wello locked his rear wheel and lost touch with the pack. A 3-bike pileup at Turn 15 whittled the group down to six. The speed of the Yamaha Y15 ZR prepared by the Maju engineers were clearly hard to beat. Fernando sailed to the finish line with 15’32.583s. Mohd Amirul Ariff Musa made it to second place with 15’32.691s and McKinley Kyle Paz claimed third place with 15’32.708s. Kyle is the current Underbone 150cc leader with 41 points.

AZLAN SHAH IS FIRST ASB1000 WINNER

Malaysian rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman made history when he became the first winner of the inaugural ASB1000 class in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. It was also the 35-year-old’s first outing with new team ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team. Last season, Azlan was racing in the 600cc class with Kawasaki. TheMalaysian rider started the race from second on the grid, sandwiched between pole sitter Thitipong Warokorn and fellow Malaysian Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi in third. Australian Broc Parkes, who had been a formidable competitor all week long, crashed out during the morning qualifying practice. His best qualifying time of 2’06.808s placed him sixth on the grid behind Indonesian Ahmad Yudhistira and Chaiwichit Nisakul. A flying start from Thitipong gave him the holeshot. The Kawasaki Thailand Racing Team rider was able to quickly gain some distance on the chasing Azlan. Behind him, Broc Parkes made a mistake at Turn 1 and dropped further down the group to eighth. The gap between Thitipong and Azlan began to narrow on Lap 7, while at the same time Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN’s Broc Parkes had clawed his way up to third. By then, Broc was 2.7 seconds adrift of the leaders and the remaining four laps looked to be a two-rider race. Thitipong tried to respond to Azlan’s pressure on Lap 9 but seemed to have over-cooked his tyres. Azlan took the lead at the entry of the last corner and immediately opened up a gap on Lap 10. As the chequered flag came down on Lap 11, Azlan became the first official winner of the ASB1000 class with 23’21.172s. Thitipong and Broc maintained their respective positions to join Azlan on the podium. “I tried to overtake Thitipong at the start of the race, but he was racing very hard. So I decided to settle down and wait for the closing laps while keeping my tyres fresh. I knew my chance would come soon when I saw Thitipong sliding all over the place on Lap 5,” said Azlan who dedicated this win to his new team, the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Racing Team. Azlan’s Race 1 win could not have come at a better time. All day long throughout the season opener of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship, the Malaysian riders had missed out on the chance to stand on the top step of the podium in the Underbone 150cc, Asia Production 250cc and SuperSports 600cc categories. The riders will meet again for Race 2 at 1.00pm on Sunday, March 10, 2019. Entry to the Sepang Circuit grandstands are free for the public.

IT’S NOT JUST LUCK FOR LUCKY

Lucky Hendriansyah has proven that his top performance throughout the first round of the 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship is more than just luck. The Astra Honda Racing Team rider started the Asia Production 250cc Race 1 from fifth on the grid, lining up on second row behind pole sitter Muklada Sarapuech, Irfan Ardiansyah, Andy Muhammad Fadly and Awhin Sanjaya. Lucky was the only rookie among the top five and within the space of a lap, began challenging Andy Muhammad Fadly for the lead. Lucky succeeded in taking control of the race on Lap 2 but found it hard to get away from Kawasaki’s Andy. The one-on-one battle went all the way to the chequered flag. The more experienced Andy almost lost control when he pushed beyond the limits to overtake Lucky at the final corner. While Andy struggled to tame his fidgety Kawasaki Ninja 250, Lucky raced to the finish line to stop the clock with 19’34.655s. A disappointed Andy had to settle for second place with 19’34.839s followed by Irfan Ardiansyah in third with 19’38.376s. Earlier in the race, pole sitter Muklada Sarapuech developed engine problems on Lap 3 and had to retire in tears. While the spotlight remained on the battle at the front, the most impressive performance of the day went to Manual Tech KYT Kawasaki Racing’s Aiki Iyoshi who went from last on the 25-rider grid to fifth in the race.

ONE FOR MCKINLEY IS ONE FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Filipino rider McKinley Kyle Paz had a dream start to his 2019 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Arriving at the Sepang Circuit for his full-season debut, the Uma Racing Yamaha Philippines rider delivered an astounding win to prevent an all-Malaysian clean sweep of the Underbone 150cc podium. McKinley qualified for the second spot on the front row, but on a 34-rider Underbone grid, the front row starting position gave him only minimal advantages. While the usual jostling for position carried on for the entire six laps of the race, McKinley was one of the more consistent leaders of the front pack along with team mates Mohd Akid Aziz and Fernando Masato. The Uma Racing Yamaha Philippines Team rider won the slipstream race at the final sprint to the finish line with 15’28.658s. Mohd Affendi Rosli placed second with 15’28.870s and Mohd Akid Aziz was third with 15’28.886s.
